Unmasking the SAG-AFTRA Halloween Costume Controversy: No, You Can’t Be a Striking Actor!

In a shocking twist that would leave even M. Night Shyamalan scracthing his head in confusion, SAG-AFTRA, the iconic actors’ union, has conjured up a list of Halloween costumes that its members are forbidden to don. It’s like a blockbuster Hollywood crossover with the Costume Police!

Imagine Jason Voorhees trading his hockey mask for a presidential one, or Freddy Krueger realizing he can’t wear that iconic sweater to the SAG-AFTRA Halloween bash – talk about slashing dreams!

As for the ‘why,’ it’s all about maintaining the sanctity of public perception. You wouldn’t want to see your favorite A-lister cast as, well, themselves, or, say, a certain fictional wizard named Harry. The suspense is killing us: What’s left to wear when everything is off the table? A ghost, perhaps? Although even they might face a spectral rights dispute.

But let’s not forget, Halloween is the season for rebirth, and if you’re a striking actor, why not go meta and dress as a striking actor forbidden to wear a striking actor costume? Now that’s an Oscar-worthy performance we’d all pay to see!

So, as the union’s guidelines cast a shadow over some costume choices, it’s a reminder that even in the land of make-believe, there are rules to obey – and they’re scarier than any horror movie plot twist!  Below is the BeWarE and DO NOT WEAR LIST:

  • Barbie and Ken (from Warner Bros’ “Barbie”)
  • Wednesday Adams (from Netflix’s “Wednesday”)
  • Eleven or Vecna (from Netflix’s “Stranger Things”)
  • Superhero characters (from Disney’s Marvel Studios or Warner Bros’ DC Studios)
  • Harry Potter characters (from the Warner Bros franchise)
  • Star Wars characters (from Disney’s Lucasfilm)
  • Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow (from HBO’s “Game of Thrones”)
  • Ted Lasso or Roy Kent (from Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso”)
  • “Carmy” Berzatto or Sydney Adamu (from FX’s “The Bear”)
